"Snapchat has had fun filters and stickers for some time now," says Wesley Farnam, chief digital strategist with The Idea People. "These filters are fun, easy to use and help a user express their feelings or personality in a creative way. It was only a matter of time before brands and businesses got into the filter game."
Ok, so the filters in Snapchat have been around for a while. The level of sophistication with geolocation in smartphones has enabled Snapchat to develop a digital marketing opportunity for brands to create custom filters that are available within a restricted geography. "Think about having a special event or party at your business location and you want to give attending customers a free gift," adds Farnam. "Why not give them a custom free filter that is available only for a specific time and only at your specific location? Genius."
Whether it's for a house party or wedding, a coffee shop or campus-wide event, Geofilters make it easy for Snapchatters who are there to send a brand's message to their friends.
"The process is actually very user friendly and Snapchat did a great job at creating a product that brands can buy as much or as little as they need," added Farnam."
Step 1: You can be as creative as you want when you design your custom geofilter. You just need to adhere to Snapchat's design guidelines.
Step 2: Then pick a time and set a real geofence area for your geofilter. In the example in this post, we created a custom geofilter for Hydrate Medical in Miami at a Swim Week event at the Westin Hotel. You can see by the highlighted area where the custom geofilter was available.
Step 3: Submit your geofilter and details and the Snapchat team will review it within one business day.
Step 4: Once approved, you can then promote your custom geofilter through social media and at your event. Neat, easy and quick digital marketing.
"We had over 4,000 views of our Hydrate Medical custom Snapchat geofilter during the one day event we wanted the coverage," added Farnam. "For such a small cost we saw major positive returns."
The cost of the custom geofilter depends totally upon the amount of geography you need for your campaign. However, at large events expect the available number of filters to be snapped (pun intended) up.
