JumpShot Genie

JumpShot Genie: A nationally-recognized basketball training app by Dell Curry.

The Challenge

Dell Curry, Charlotte Hornets NBA Hall of Famer, and a Charlotte-based entrepreneur teamed up to form a large start-up called JumpShot Genie. They named The Idea People as their agency of record and engaged us to take the project from ideas to product launch to digital marketing and PR. The deliverables included one-on-one coaching on demand, where users could upload a video of their jump shots. Users receive an expert critique by their JumpShot Genie coach, complete with personalized video analysis, customized video drills, and interactive follow-up sessions.

The Solution

After a series of discovery meetings with the client, our team brainstormed ideas, and after many hours of white-boarding, we established a creative and technical strategy. We presented JumpShot Genie with a project summary, outlining the new ideas, timeline and action items. They were thrilled with our suggestions, including player ability to capture a video from any source, easy video uploading, coach integration, technical motion analysis, and a feature-packed video publishing and sharing platform. When they gave us the green light, we were heads down designing and programming.

Designing the Brand

JumpShot Genie needed a strong brand that instantly identified the name and basketball. Through many sketches, designs, and iterations, we presented three different concepts, and they chose a direction that included our suggested tag line: “You Shoot. We Correct. You Improve.” The logo includes complementary colors, with the basketball and net integrated into the design. As a finishing touch, we added shooting stars to add fun and excitement. The logo has been used, not only on the JumpShot Genie digital products, but also on screen-printed and embroidered shirts, and a wide variety of merchandise available for sale for registered players.

Creating the Experience

Dell Curry is the official ambassador for JumpShot Genie and is well-known nationwide as an NBA Hall of Famer and play-by-play announcer. Naturally, Curry became the hero image on the homepage and is featured prominently throughout the site in custom photos and HD videos. We designed a user-centric wireframe, compressing the JumpShot Genie functions down to 5 simple steps. We then designed the site, using the brand colors, to effectively display the features and benefits of the product. Each page features a large pricing table, including the most popular subscription. Players are awarded custom badges, based on their statistics, which are shareable across social media.

Built for iOS and Android

JumpShot Genie’s app was developed in Cordova, meaning it is a hybrid app and can be used on iOS and Android devices. It features a robust system including sign-up, in-app purchases, camera/video integration, and video cloud uploading. Players receive their analyzed training videos in the app as well and can interact with their coach for more personalized conversations. The app keeps a history of player lessons, as well as awards and rankings on the leaderboard. All of the app’s functions connect to a complex web application that keeps the app and the website in sync.

Software Development

The programming behind JumpShot Genie is a combination of WordPress, PHP, and Java. This extensive software development allows the app to integrate with the website and allows a seamless user experience, whether the player is logging in from the app or desktop. The e-commerce system automatically assigns a coach with a player, and allows the coach to sign-in to analyze uploaded videos by highlighting correction techniques, slow motion, and adding expertise (drawings, audio, and text). The admin system automatically assigns badges, drills, and rankings (local, city, state, region, country, and world). It also acts as the hub for communication and conversations with a player’s coach.

Digital Marketing

Both the website and the app feature custom content, created by our content team at The Idea People. Each page has been optimized for high rankings on Google. Part of the digital marketing strategy includes organic search engine growth, social media, and Google, Facebook and Twitter PPC. Custom campaigns have been created to attract youth, high school, college, and professional players. These campaigns consist of landing pages, drip email marketing and special promotions. Public relations is a major component, including Dell Curry sponsored press conferences, player seminars, and various featured articles in major basketball publications.

Video Production

Throughout the commerce website, marketing videos are featured prominently. These HD videos, recorded and produced by The Idea People, feature Dell Curry endorsing the product, and explaining how JumpShot Genie works. Also, there are video testimonials and sample correction videos. Inside the player’s locker room, reside dozens of practice-makes-perfect basketball drills featuring Dell Curry.
